Pacbitun is a Maya ruin in Cayo District in Belize.

Pacbitun roughly means "stones set in the earth".

history

This city had its heyday in the pre-classical and classical periods. The oldest finds date back to 1000 BC. Dated. The place, like most places in the area, was likely abandoned around AD 800. This has been archaeologically investigated since 1971.

From the Western Highway at Santa Elena in the direction San Antonio drive. After this town, after about 2 km, the site is on the right-hand side. The ruins are not always open, so you should make inquiries beforehand or book a tour.

The center to be visited extends over a total of one square kilometer:

  • Plaza A with the surrounding pyramids
  • A Ball playground
  • Two Chambers in which, in addition to two noble women, a variety of different musical instruments were found
  • A total of 24 Pyramids but only a fraction of which has been exposed. The tallest is 16.5 meters high.
  • Here were 8 Steles found.
