Bennwihr is a city in FrenchAlsace and member of the association of Pays de Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr. It's up to the Alsatian wine route.

background

The Bennwihr area was already inhabited by people in the Stone Age, who found fertile soil and abundance of fish in the rivers Fecht and Weiss. The place was first mentioned as "Bebonivillare" (after "" Bebo ", a Roman who had established his seat here) in the year 777 in a gift from the abbot Fulrad. After the turmoil and destruction in the Thirty Years' War and the French Revolution, there was an economic boom in the 19th century in the course of industrialization and the construction of the first railway line through Alsace. After the losses in the 1st World War, the village becomes in the 2nd World War, in December 1944 during the Acts of war around Colmar, destroyed. On December 5, 1944, the village was completely destroyed in the course of the fighting; only four houses remained and the memorial for the dead of World War I, 20 residents were killed. The residents initially fled to their cellars, from December 14 to 22, when the shell rain and the fires became more and more intense, to 24 neighboring communities, whereby another 13 residents died, often from exhaustion in the extremely harsh winter. The liberation of the village took place through the 3rd Infantry Division of the US Army On December 24th, however, it remained an artillery target for the German Wehrmacht for a month. From 1946 to 1959 the place was rebuilt, the last barracks of the provisional village in the southeast of the destroyed village could be abandoned in September 1959.[1]

Bennwihr has been one since 2007 Ville fleurie, a "flower-adorned city" and carries im Concours des villes et villages fleuris ("Competition of cities and towns decorated with flowers") 3 out of 4 roses.

St. Peter and Paul Church

Regarding the chapter "Sights" it should be noted that the old village, as already mentioned, was "flattened" in December 1944 and nothing was left of the beautiful streets and houses that were certainly there in the past - everything except the memorial was new between 1946 and 1959 built.

  • 1 - The town hall was built in 1957 according to plans by the architects Pouradier-Duteil and Pillon. The gable shows the coat of arms of the place (lapis lazuli shield with silver cross) and underneath a cross of honor in memory of the provisional "Martyrdorf"
  • 2 - The memorial for the fallen and the deported and perished citizens of the two world wars was inaugurated in 1925 as a memorial for the dead of the first world war. It depicts two women in their regional costumes, an Alsatian and a Lorraine woman, who together wear a funeral wreath to commemorate the soldiers. Apart from a few bullet hits, which can still be seen today, the memorial remained unscathed during World War II, although the rest of the village, including the church in front of which it stood at the time, was in ruins. In the course of the reconstruction of the place, it was moved to its current location in November 1958.
  • 3 - There was once a church that was destroyed in the fire of 1498. A new church was built in 1507, which was temporarily restored and rebuilt until December 1944 as the center of the Catholic parish. The following have been preserved from her: a passion figure, a stone engraved with the year 1779 and a crucifix from 1890. They adorn the outer wall of the church under the connecting arches between the church and the church tower. In addition, the residents of Bennwihr had brought two statues to safety, which are now in the Jungfaru Maria Chapel inside the church to the left of the choir. The current church was consecrated in the summer of 1959 as a symbolic conclusion to the reconstruction of the village. Here, too, the architects were those of the town hall, Pouradier-Duteil and Pillon. In 1957 the church was renovated according to plans by the architect Jacques Prioleau. Outwardly striking is the beautiful roof with a "Burgundy" motif. The stained glass windows depicting Christ's resurrection are particularly impressive. The altar in the choir is made of Carrara marble. There is also a statue of Christ and a Madonna here. The chapel to the left of the church choir is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. You can also see a way of the cross. The church ensemble also includes a circular baptistery and the 42 m high bell tower made of sandstone blocks that come from the destroyed village and the church. The bell room of the campanile-like tower is open on all four sides so that its peal can be heard from afar.
  • 4 - The fountain of the Sainte-Odile, Patron saint of Alsace, was on the site of the old well that was destroyed in 1944 on August 22, 1987 by the daughter (?) Of the marshal Jean de Lattre de Tassigny inaugurated.
  • 1 - The school from 1956 had previous buildings from the 17th century.
  • 5 - The house 5 rue du Général de Gaulle is one of the four not completely destroyed houses in the old village. It had retained its outer walls and was enlarged by adding a wing.
  • 6 - The wine cooperative's wine cellar was created in 1946 for all winegrowers because it was not possible to finance a new one for every destroyed wine cellar. After initially 32 winemakers who implemented the company and 54 winemakers whose grapes were the first to be pressed, the cooperative now has around 250 winemakers. In the courtyard (to the left of the street) you can see a historic fountain from the 16th century and (right) a roofed, old wine press from 1827.
  • 7 - The small fountain from 1760 was moved here in 2008 as part of the redesign of the Rathausplatz and marks the place where the provisional barracks village (1946-1959) began.
  • 8 - The passion figure of Katzenzungen stands lonely on the way and is the only evidence of the former village of Katzenwangen, which disappeared in the 15th century after a plague epidemic. The last two survivors, expelled in other villages, were taken in Bennwihr. As a thank you, the district passed to Bennwihr. In the 16th century a pilgrimage chapel was built here, in which a St. Grimmen (?) Was venerated, nothing of which has survived today.
  • 9 - Bennwihr station is located on the first Basel-Strasbourg railway line, opened in 1840, and was built in 1874. In the course of the improved infrastructure and the relocation of goods and passenger transport to the road, it has now been closed.
