Map representing the spread of Berber in North Africa
Flag of the Berber people
Berber is the language of North Africa, still spoken by many millions of Berbers, although Arabic dialects are spoken today in much of the territory.
The main countries where Berber is still spoken are: Egypt (an oasis), Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger is Burkina Faso. Berber is the official language in Morocco and Algeria, it is part of the national languages in Mali and Niger; and finally it is a regional language in Libya.
The varieties of Berber are sometimes very different from each other, so in this phrase book we will point out above all the common terms, and in case of significant divergences we will point out the forms of particular dialects (in some cases real languages, with numerous speakers and an important literary history). In particular, the following abbreviations will be used: Dj- = Djerba (island in the south of Tunisia); k. = Kabylie (from the region of Kabylia, Northern Algeria); chl = chleuh, the language of southern Morocco; rif = the language of Rif, in the north of Morocco; you. = tuareg, the Berber language of the nomads of Sahara.
Pronunciation guide
Berber has many different sounds than Italian, and it takes some practice to learn them well. Many of these sounds also belong to theArabic, so those who know this language are more likely to pronounce Berber too.
