Also known as the Crown of Anhalt, the residence of the Dukes of Anhalt-Bernburg dates back to the 10th century. In the 16th century, Prince Wolfgang von Anhalt-Köthen, who was then also Prince von Bernburg, ordered the palace to be expanded in the Renaissance style. In fact, it still has that shape to this day. In the castle moat, bears are kept in a kennel, a heraldic animal from Bernburg ("Bärenburg") and the Askan dynasty.

Bernburg's reputation as the site of the Nazi extermination center is infamous, where nearly 10,000 sick and disabled people and 5,000 concentration camp inmates were murdered under the euthanasia program. From 1981, a monument was created here:

  • 10 Bernburg Monument, Olga-Benario-Straße 16/18, ☎ 49 (0) 3471 319816. Open: (except public holidays) Tuesday to Thursday from 9:00 to 16:00, Friday from 9:00 to 12 : 00, every first Sunday of the month from 11:00 to 16:00

Active recreation

Despite its small population, Bernburg also has a lot of work to do. The outdoor pool, the indoor pool, the fairy-tale garden or the zoo are worth visiting. A ride is also recommended park railway or MS Saalefee. It is also possible to play bowling or use the sauna. A cinema is also available.

In good weather, it is worth going for a hike along the Soława River (up and down the river). The paths along the river are partially paved, which makes them very easy to walk.

Guided tours around Bernburg do not run regularly.

Tourist information

To non-residents, the Bernese dialect may sound unusual at first (as it does in other areas in Germany).

Understanding in English or other foreign languages can be a bit difficult in Bernburg.

The main post office is located at Friedensallee 10, directly in the city center. Smaller parcel shops etc. Also easy to find.

Bernburg is the driest place in Germany. Due to its special location in the shadow of the Harz, rainfall is relatively rare. Besides, like in the rest of central Germany, the climate shows distinct seasons, with some hot summer days (including night) and cool or frosty winter days.
