Borutta is a center of the Sardinia northern, in the province of Sassari.

Background
- Origins of the name
The town in ancient times had the name of Gruta (gruta - cave) which later became Borutta.
- History
The territory of Borutta extends along the valley of the Rio Frida, south of Mount Pelao and is located on the northern part of the Sorres plain. The natural cave "Ulari" is the oldest evidence of the presence of man in the area and was inhabited in the recent Neolithic (3500 BC) as evidenced by the numerous finds of finds such as axes, flint and obsidian artifacts, crockery and human bones. The locality called Monte Sorrano, which is located above the Ulàri cave, assumes great importance thanks to the disappeared city of Sorra (or Sorres), which was a bishopric and together with the village of Borutta, belonged in the Middle Ages to the Giudicato of Torres and was part of the curatoria of Meilogu, of which Sorres was the capital. At the fall of the Giudicato (1259), it passed to the Lordship of the Doria, and subsequently to the Aragonese, under whom it became a fief. In the period of the Aragonese domination, the population of Sorres, which survived the various massacres, poured into Borutta even before 1388 after Sorres was razed to the ground and Borutta became the bishop's residence. In 1503 the diocese was suppressed and united with that of Sassari. In 1750 it was incorporated into the Valdecalzana marquisate, granted to the Martinez and then to the De Queralt, to whom it was redeemed in 1839 after the suppression of the feudal system.
In April 1946 Ninetta Bartoli was elected mayor in this town who, together with Ada Natali from Marche and Maria Chieco Bianchi from Puglia, was one of the first three mayors in Italy and held this role for twelve years.

- Plateau of Punta 'and walls. Here there is a series of furraghes (limestone) which testify to about a century of lime production.
- 4 Sa Rocca Ulari cave (It is located under the monastery.). Inside it lives a large colony of bats, made up of 5 different species. Guano was extracted from this cave.
Based on findings of artifacts referable to the Ozieri culture, it can reasonably be assumed that in the recent Neolithic, around 3500 BC approximately, the cave was frequented and used both as a residence and as a burial place. The cave was recently closed by a gate, but this does not prevent access anyway.
