Geographical notes
Bono rises 540 m above the sea level, at the foot of the mount Rasu. Inhabited since prehistoric times, its territory is characterized by a great variety of landscapes, in a continuous alternation of plains, hills and mountains, and extends from the Tirso valley to the top of Mount Rasu whose peak, "Sa Punta Manna ", reaches 1259 meters above sea level
Of considerable naturalistic importance is the locality of "Sos Nibberos", located on the north-west slopes of Mount Rasu, which among other things includes the largest Taxus baccata forest in Italy, declared a natural monument; some millenary specimens reach 16 meters in height and have a diameter greater than one meter. Not far from the town are Mount Pisanu and the rest area "Sa Puntighedda". At the former barracks of the Forestry Corps of Mount Pisanu, at 861 meters above sea level, various tree species have been planted such as the Atlantic cedar , the downy oak, the giant thuja; among them a noteworthy specimen of silver fir emerges.
Most of the territory of Bono for significant naturalistic interest, is protected and safeguarded by the intense activity carried out by the Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps and the Forest Authority of Sardinia and is frequented by many tourists also attracted by the presence of numerous lakes.
Bono is located in the historic region of Goceano and borders on He longs, Well all, Bonorva, Bottidda, Bultei, Burgos, Nughedu San Nicolò, Onifera (Nuoro) is Orotelli (Nuoro).
Background
Origins
The territory of Bono has been inhabited by man since the Nuraghic age as evidenced by the numerous nuraghi scattered throughout the territory.
Judicial Age
During the Middle Ages Bono belonged to the Giudicato of Torres and precisely to the curatoria of the Goceano with Bottidda, Burgos, Anela, Esporlatu, Bultei and Benetutti. In the first decades of the 12th century the island was enriched with churches, monasteries and castles. Bono also had the new church, in Pisan Romanesque style, today the parish of San Michele Arcangelo, his convent, one of the oldest in Sardinia, in Monte Rasu and a few kilometers away the Castello del Goceano.
Modern Age
Under the Spanish domination Bono followed the fate of the rest of Sardinia: depopulation and economic depression; but, in 1721, after the transfer of the Kingdom of Sardinia to the Savoy, the situation improved with a notable increase in agricultural activity. In 1796, following the participation in the anti-feudal uprisings of Giovanni Maria Angioy, a native of the place, the center was attacked by the Piedmontese troops who, after bombarding it, conquered it. The Bonesi waited for the soldiers on the way back, attacked them and took some prisoners. At the beginning of the last century the town was the provincial capital for a few years, then it was included in the province of Sassari, although still today it maintains greater cultural and economic relations with that of Nuoro.
