background

Map of Breitenfurt near Vienna

The settlement area of the market town lies largely in the valley of the rich Liesing and extends over 15 kilometers in a west-east direction from the source of the river to the Vienna city limits Kalksburg. The municipality includes the following localities and settlements (from west to east):

  • Großhöniggraben
  • Hochroterd
  • Breitenfurt West
  • Right ditch
  • Left ditch
  • Deer dance
  • Breitenfurt Ost - the main settlement
  • Breitenfurt Ostend - right on the Vienna city limits

Breitenfurt was first mentioned as a settlement in 1622; until then there was only one field name. During the Turkish siege in 1683, the settlement including the hunting lodge was largely destroyed and then repopulated by settlers from Salzburg, Bavaria and Styria. In the following centuries, the most important economic branch of the place was forestry.

From the second half of the 19th century, the place became a popular destination for the Viennese urban population; also a popular suburbanization area after the Second World War. In 1938 the place was incorporated into Vienna (part of the 25th district, Mödling) and in 1954 it became independent again.

The place gained prominence in pop culture in 1993, when the Viennese rock group Alkbottel mentioned the place in the chorus in the balade "Nie mehr wieder fahr 'i furt" (a parody of the STS song "Irgendwann stay i then durt"): Never again drive 'i furt ... [i] stay there in Braadnfuat (never again I drive away, ... I stay at home in Breitenfurt).
