Brugg is the district capital of the district Brugg of the canton Aargau in the Switzerland. The city is on the Aare and on Southern foot of the Jura.

In the area below the city of Brugg you will find the so-called “Water Castle of Switzerland”, the landscape in which the Reuss and Limmat meet the Aare.

Brugg received city rights from the Habsburgs in 1284. In the 15th century the city was conquered by the Bernese and in 1803 it came to the canton of Aargau. In 1901 Altenburg was incorporated into Brugg, in 1970 Lauffohr and 2010 Umiken. The settlement of the city of Brugg is with the neighboring municipality Windisch grown together.

Brugg is an industrial location and the seat of the Swiss Farmers' Association and has a campus of the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences.

Train & bus

Brugg train station is located on the municipal border between Brugg and Windisch. It is connected by express trains with Zurich, Basel, Bern, Olten and Aarau. A regional train goes to Lenzburg. The S12 connects Brugg directly with Winterthur. There are also various post bus connections, e.g. to Bad Zurzach. The express trains and the S12 run every half hour, the regional trains and Postbuses every hour to half an hour. Current timetables & connections at sbb.ch Brugg can be reached from Zurich in less than half an hour.

In the street

Brugg can be reached by car via Hauptstrasse 3 from Basel and Zurich and Hauptstrasse 5 Lausanne-Biel-Aarau-Brugg-Waldshut.

Brugg has a connection to the A3 Basel-Zurich-St. Gallen, about 4 km from the center. The “Mägenwil” connection for the A1 is 4 km away.

By plane

The Zurich-Kloten International Airport can be easily reached by train: a direct train connection every hour during the day (40 minutes), and other connections via Zurich main station (less than 1 hour, change trains).

In the city of Brugg, all sights are easily accessible on foot, the city center is kept free of private traffic as a pedestrian zone.

A dense postbus network leads into the areas around Brugg, which also opens up the villages Umiken and Lauffohr, which belong to Brugg, and far into the periphery of the Brugg district and the law leads.

Churches

  • Reformed city church. Renovated and redesigned several times, the last time around 1896 when new windows were added.
  • Catholic Church. Between the Neumarkt and the old town, dates from 1905.
  • Umiken Church. From the 15th century, accessible by post bus. Get off at Umiken Church.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

  • Altenburg Castle. Around one kilometer west of the old town, it was built in the 16th century and is now a youth hostel.
  • Black tower. Built at the end of the 12th century and around 25 meters high.

Buildings

  • Old town of Brugg. Extends upwards from the Aare.
  • town hall. From the 16th century, built in the late Gothic style.
  • Black tower, next to the historic Aare bridge.
  • Latin school, next to the church. Dating from 1640, it is built in the baroque style.
  • Armory, at the court. Was built in 1673.
  • Salt house, at the court. Was built in 1732 and consists of only one room supported by columns.
  • The red house, at the top of the old town. Was significantly expanded in 1840.
  • Umiken terrace settlement. Was completed in 1971, one of the first terraced settlements in Switzerland, can be reached by post bus, get off at Umiken Mühlehalde.

  • Hofstatt. The only larger square in the old town.
  • Neumarkt. Brugg's shopping mile with a variety of shops.
  • Eisiplatz. Between the old town and Neumarkt.

Brugg's shopping mile is Neumarktplatz. In the front of the Migros and Coophochhaus there are several shops that are connected underground, giving the impression of a shopping center. Further around Neumarktplatz there are other shops such as H&M, Vögele, Chicorée and other boutiques as well as electronics stores. If you cross the street at the end of Neumarktplatz, there is another small shopping center. If you continue down this street, there are more shops that stretch up to the old town. There are also some small shops and boutiques in the old town. At the upper end of Neumarktplatz there is the C&A, the main post office and the Tchibo, offset a bit to the rear.
