An area known for the centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship by glassmakers and wood carvers. Geographically, the Bohemian Forest extends along the Czech-Bavarian-Austrian border with the municipal boundary of Loučovice (German: Kienberg) as its extension point in the southeast.

The Bohemian Forest holiday region is a pristine low mountain range of farmers. Where a lot, independent, down-to-earth, but a little different, and with a bitter, but hearty charm is. Its wooded areas, with golden-brown, iron-containing streams, attract hikers, cyclists and those looking for relaxation.
fauna
According to the biologist Pavel Šustr (German: Paul Schuster) the importance of the Bohemian Forest as a habitat for deer, roe deer, lynx and other mammals is great, because “The space for large animals, especially for mammals, is decreasing in Europe”, he writes in his recently published book “Jelenovití na Šumavě ”(“ Deer in the Bohemian Forest ”), in which he presents the research results. The Bohemian Forest is in common with the Bavarian forest one of the last territories in Central Europewhere such animals would still find enough space (Information from the Prager Zeitung from 6. II 2014).

protection
The Bohemian Forest is an exceptionally valuable natural landscape, in the area of which many nature reserves were already declared before it was re-declared in 1963 CHKO (German: LSG) Šumava, which newly included in its protected area. In 1991 the Šumava National Park was recognized as the most valuable part of the CHKO (German: LSG) Šumava was founded. The Šumava National Park and the protection zone formed by the rest of the Šumava LSG cover a large part of the Bohemian Forest area, which is thus extensively protected. Together with the Bavarian Forest National Park, this protected area represents the largest protected forest area in Central Europe, just as it was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Much spruce monoculture forest fell victim to the bark beetle, whereby these areas are slowly recovering, now without human intervention. Despite various quarrels, the human being is largely to blame for it. The CHKO (German: LSG) Šumava is a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Origin of name
The Bohemian Forest is first mentioned in history by Strabo and Claudius Ptolemy as Gabreta Silva. Later than lat .:silva bohemica, so hist. of"Forest ofBoier", in his work "Rerum Hungaricum”By Antonio Bonfini in 1565, along with today's Czech name Šumavaused, and later reused in the 17th century by the authors Pavel Stransky and Bohuslav Balbin. The name Šumava comes from the Old Slavic word "šuma" for a forest (dense forest).
The Bohemian Forest as part of the Sumava Highlands Low mountain range (Czech.:Šumavská hornatina) belongs to what geologists call the Bohemian Massif, which in turn makes up ¾ of the Czech Republic and is one of the oldest mountain ridges on earth. This got its name from the 4th to 1st century BC. Celtic settlers here Boier. From this tribal name it is not far to the Baiern or Bavaria. In fact, the term "Bavarian Forest" is said to have only been introduced as a marketing idea in the 19th century to attract tourists. To this day, the Bavarian Forest refers to the section of forest under Bavarian administration, while the section of forest under Czech administration continues to be only the Bohemian Forest (Czech.:Šumava) is called. In Austria people talk about the Mühlviertel and the locals just talk about it Woid.
language
Is lingua franca Czech. Occasionally, with a bit of luck, you will meet German-speaking Czechs or even Bohemian Forests. They talked until they were driven out Middle Bavarian in the southern areas along the border with Lower and Upper Austria and in the Bohemian Forest. security
