Castel of Iudica (or Castel of Judica) is a city of the Sicily.

Castel di Iudica is far from Catania about 50 km.

Background

On Mount Iudica there are traces of an archaic settlement (VIII-III century BC), while on Mount Turcisi there are the remains of a phrourion.

Under the Arab rule, it had the name "Zotica" and there was a castle, which was conquered by Ruggero around 1076, according to the story of the Norman chronicler Goffredo Malaterrae, and was donated to the city of Caltagirone. According to the testimony of the Arab geographer al-Idrisi was a flourishing agricultural village at the beginning of the 12th century

On the top of the mountain a small church dedicated to was built in the 17th century Archangel Michael, of which only the bell tower ("Campanaro") remains.

Between 1816 and 1819 it became a fraction of the municipality of Ramacca with the name of Giardinelli. In 1934 it became an autonomous municipality and took its current name in memory of the castle that had risen on Mount Iudica.

The fastest way to get from Castel di Iudica to Catania is to take the highway Palermo-Catania, in order to arrive in 35/40 minutes in the capital.

What to do

Inside the country it is very nice to walk outdoors or on foot or by bicycle, in order to feel pure and unpolluted air like in big cities. This is because there is not a large influx of gasoline cars or vehicles within the country, which can cause smog.
