Cavallino-Treporti (Cavałin-Treporti in Veneto) is a seaside resort in the province of Venice in Venetian coast in Veneto.

To know

The name Cavallino derives its origin from the use of this area for the breeding of horses by the ancient Venetians. Exactly as in the adjacent town of Jesolo whose name derives from Equilium.

Geographical notes

The territory of the municipality consists of a peninsula (the Litorale del Cavallino) that separates the northern Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. The river Sile (which flows in the old riverbed of the Piave and for this reason also known as Piave Vecchia) separates it to the north-east from the municipal territory of Jesolo.

The peninsula is divided from the lagoon by the Pordelio canal which, to the west, branches off into two other canals, the Portosecco and the Saccagnana; all three are navigable. The Pordelio ends near the Sile to which it is connected by the Casson canal; the confluence of the latter into the river is regulated by a lock.

Background

The territory flourished in Roman times (the mosaics of a villa were brought to light in Lio Piccolo) and especially in the early Middle Ages, when important centers such as Torcello, Ammiana and Costanziaco arose in the northern lagoon. The changing environmental conditions and the affirmation of Venice they brought these to decay in the following centuries; the area became swampy and became malarial and was recovered only during the later reclamations that led to the foundation of the current settlements. Proof of this is the presence of the word Ca 'in numerous toponyms, a term that indicates an agricultural estate. The excavation of the Cavallino canal (now the Casson canal) which was able to connect the lagoon to the Piave also contributed to the recovery of the area.

After the fall of the Serenissima and the establishment of the municipalities, the current Cavallino-Treporti depended on Burano and its fate followed when the latter was suppressed and integrated in Venice (1923).

Events and parties

  • The Palio Remiero. Simple icon time.svgFrom the second Sunday of June to September. One of the most important events of the year is certainly the Palio Remiero delle Contrade di Cavallino-Treporti: the 12 "Contrade" into which the territory is divided (Faro Piave Vecchia, Cavallino, Ca 'di Valle, Ca' Ballarin, Ca 'Vio , Ca 'Pasquali, Ca' Savio, Punta Sabbioni, Treporti, Saccagnana, Mesole and Lio Piccolo) challenge each other every year in one of the most consolidated traditions of the area, rowing. On the second Sunday of June, the 12 Contradas give rise to a spectacular rowing challenge on Caorline, a challenge preceded by a water parade and accompanied by challenges between the Champions on gondolas and Youngsters on mascarete. In addition to this, the Palio includes challenges of archery, soccer, bowls and other "minor" regattas, tournaments that will establish the winning Contrada at the close of the Palio (September).
