Understand

This region is poorer than the coastal provinces to the east and south and provides them with a significant number of migrant workers.

The regions of Sichuan and of Chongqing are locally considered to be part of Western China because they are located on the edge of the historical China of the Han ethnic group, although they are today in the center of the country. West Sichuan was once part of a Tibetan empire and marks the entry point to the ethnic minority regions of Tibet and Xinjiang.

Chongqing, historically and culturally belonging to Sichuan, administratively became an autonomous municipality. With an agglomeration of 30 million inhabitants, this megalopolis is one of the largest cities in China and the world.

No visit to Chongqing would be complete without a visit to one of the famous restaurants hot pot in all the city. A spicy broth with seasonings that most westerners have never tasted, diners boil their meats and vegetables in this heavenly broth. Try pig's brain and lotus roots or a beef skewer with potatoes - everything looks better with a hot pot!

Security

In mainland China your only risk is being stolen by pickpockets so use common sense. Driving can be very dangerous, especially in places with mountainous roads. Some people recommend sitting in the back of the bus in the event of an accident. On occasion, foreigners are banned from minority (Tibetan) areas during politically sensitive times without warning and you will be fired and fined if you are discovered. It's more likely that you won't even be able to buy a ticket. Check in advance if you are traveling to these areas to make sure they are open!
