To know

Geographical notes

It is located at the mouth of the Val Cimolliana. The territory of the municipality of Cimolais is entirely mountainous and is largely included in the Natural park of the Friulian Dolomites, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in summer 2009. The most famous and characteristic peak is the Campanile di Val Montanaia, located in the upper Val Cimoliana and known to mountaineers and hikers.

Background

The early Venetian and Roman findings and subsequent Lombard settlements demonstrate the existence of the town from the early Middle Ages. It was one of the feudal possessions "in the mountains" of the Benedictine abbey of Sesto al Reghena until almost the entire eighteenth century. In the parish church of Santa Maria there are some wooden altars from the 16th century. The territory of Cimolais was donated by the Lombard brothers Efro, Marco and Anto to the Abbey of Sesto al Reghena in the year 762. Passed in the fifteenth century under the dominion of the Republic of Venice, Cimolais became the Arsenal of the Republic by undertaking to supply timber for the construction of the ships.

With the partial reopening of the line, from 10 December 2017 the station is again served by Regional trains in service between Sacile and Maniago. In addition to serving the city in which it is located, the station plays an important role as a hub for the surrounding valleys.

What to do

Campanile Val Montanaia
  • 1 Bell tower of Val Montanaia. It is a spire of spectacular and wild beauty, 300 meters high and with a base of 60 meters. It stands out against the sky in the center of the valley, in a position considered unique in the world because it is clearly separated from the Dolomite spiers making up the surrounding amphitheater. It is the result of alpine erosion, in particular that carried out by the large glaciers that covered and gave the main valleys their current shape.
On the summit there was a bronze bell which was brought to the top on 19 September 1926 by 22 Venetian mountaineers (hence the name of Bell tower). The bell is engraved with the motto Audentis resonant for me loca muta triumpho. Following the damage of the latter, in 1982, it was replaced with a perfectly identical copy. Today the original bronze is kept at the headquarters of the CAI Section of Pordenone.
  • 2 Visitor center of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park (Pianpinedo mountain educational center), via Roma 4 (in the locality of Éiana di Pinedo). Between the municipalities of Cimolais and Claut and on the borders of Natural park of the Friulian Dolomites, the wildlife park covers an area of 35 hectares. Made with the aim of safeguarding the maintenance and safety of every animal species, ensuring a life as close as possible to the wild condition, both in terms of socialization and spaces. It will be possible to meet some deer, roe deer, a colony of ibex or some solitary chamois. It is not excluded that marmots or squirrels are shown. Along the botanical path it is also possible to observe numerous plant species, some of which are also rare, of which some specimens can be observed inside the visitor center. There are also numerous floristic species.
  • Route of the mills. The Path of the Mills created by the Municipality of Cimolais traces the history and location of mills that in Cimolais are located along the canal that ran alongside the Cimoliana stream. The route is marked by signs. After having seen the sites of the Mills, we reach the place where the former sawmill once stood. Here an outdoor exhibition illustrates in detail the work that was done there.
