To know

In the Venetian plain, where the first corrugations of the morainic hills of the Lake Garda, Sommacampagna is 18 km from Verona, about ten from the shores of Lake Garda.
Background
The best known historical events are certainly the Risorgimento battles of the First and Third War of Independence which took place in its territory, on the morainic hills of Custoza. The history of the place has its roots in ancient times, testified by archaeological finds from prehistoric and Roman times, when the town was called Summa Campanea and developed in the area of the parish church of Sant'Andrea, to then develop in medieval times up to the church of San Rocco.
It was part of the territory of Verona, therefore of the Republic of Venice, of Lombardo Veneto and finally of united Italy. The industrial development of Verona and the proximity to the city has made the inhabited area grow, which has been equipped with new neighborhoods and has significantly increased the population, from a few thousand in the nineteenth century to almost 15,000 current inhabitants (2014). The municipal area also hosts the airport Catullus of Verona.

What see
- 1 Parish church of Sant'Andrea.
Guided tour on the first Sunday of each month from 3.00 pm.. It is the oldest monument in the city, built on the site of a Roman temple transformed into a Christian church with several interventions in a time span between 400 and 1000. In Romanesque style, it has a basilica with three naves. It preserves various frescoes and an important wooden Via Crucis, both recently restored.
- Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte. The Friars Minor held the Sanctuary in past ages; their presence is remembered by the picture that depicts at the end of the choir the Assumption with San Francesco, Sant'Antonio and San Bonaventura. The date of construction of the church is unknown, but it still shows signs of aging.
- Church of San Rocco (San Rocco al Castello). The popular denomination of San Rocco at the castle remember that the church is located on the site of the ancient castle of the city which was demolished. In 1511 the temple was dedicated to San Rocco to ask for protection from the plague. The bell tower is a recent reconstruction of 1903.
- 2 Parish Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo. In the first half of the sixteenth century the church became the main one in Sommacampagna; in a more central position, the prerogatives of the Pieve were transferred there. The Pirlàr it was enlarged and rebuilt in the mid-eighteenth century; the church thus rebuilt was consecrated in 1762. Of the ancient church of the Madonna del Pirlàr the bell tower remains.
In addition to the religious monuments, the city also preserves numerous patrician villas and palaces of the Veronese aristocracy, who built sumptuous residences here.
- Cà Zenobia. It originates between the 12th and 13th centuries, of which it retains parts of the Romanesque style; remodeled in the Gothic period, it had extensions in the sixteenth century.
- Villa della Vecchia. Villa of the second half of the sixteenth century, has an Italian garden and a Venetian style plant, with a central hall and side rooms.
- Villa Masi. It has stylistic characteristics that recall the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
- Villa Fiocco.
- Villa Venier (The Bassa). It has a large Italian garden. Its appearance is that of a large 17th century patrician palace; purchased by the municipal administration, it is used for shows in the summer and exhibitions throughout the year. Its garden is open to the public.
- Villa Bocca Trezza (A thousand and one rose). It rises in the central area; its construction is ascribable to the seventeenth century; it hosted illustrious personalities during the Risorgimento wars of 1848 and 1866 such as Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa and Archduke Albert of Austria.

Free admission. It was inaugurated by Umberto I in 1879 and collects the bones of the Italian and Austrian soldiers who died during the two Independence Wars of 1848 and 1866.

- Villa Ottolini. On the hill of the hamlet of Custoza, it dates back to the seventeenth century and enjoys a beautiful view over the plain of Villafranca of Verona is Valeggio sul Mincio. Restored by the current owner, it also preserves a chapel with 17th century furnishings.

The countryside of the morainic hills of Custoza and Sommacampagna are soils that have provided an ideal habitat for white grape vines from which the White of Custoza, a particularly pleasant soft dry wine that goes well with many dishes and is also suitable for desserts or between meals.
