Ciutadella, in long and official form Ciutadella de Menorca, is one of the two main towns on the island of Minorca. Former capital, it retains much of the medieval Gothic architecture built before the capital was moved to Maó.
Understand
Ciutadella has long been the political, economic and cultural capital of Menorca - since Roman times. But it lost this status to Mahón when the island came under British dependence at the beginning of the 18th century. Although no longer the island's capital, it remained its ecclesiastical center, with the bishop refusing to move during the British occupation and staying in the Basilica-Cathedral of Ciutadella de Menorca.
