To speak

The local variety of Catalan, the menorquí, is little different from Catalan standard, with some differences in pronunciation. As with most of the Balearic dialects, a remarkable peculiarity is the form of the definite article, called article salat: the menorquí uses es in the masculine and sa in the feminine instead of the el and la forms of standard Catalan; the article salat has been used historically in the present-day province of Girona, where many people have come from who repopulated the islands. We also hear some English words dating from the British presence: grevi, xumaquer, boinder or xoc derived from gravy, shoemaker, bow window and chalk.

  • Castel of Sant Nicolau  – watch over the port of Ciutadella de Menorca since the 17th century. Climbing the spiral staircase of this monument, you reach a watchtower from which the gaze embraces the whole city.
  • Torre llafuda  – is one of the most complete prehistoric Menorcan villages: circular dwellings, wall, caves, monoliths.
  • Santa Agueda castle  – perched at 264 meters altitude, offers an incomparable view of the North coast. The ruins visible today date from the tenth century but we also detect on the site prehistoric, Roman and Amazigh (Berber) traces.
  • Es Rafal Rubi's funeral shuttles  – collective tombs dating back to the second millennium BC exist only in Menorca and are very well preserved.
  • Mahon history museum  – tells Minorca from prehistoric times to the present day. Alternately Franciscan convent, marine school or high school, the building houses rooms of different styles: Roman, Byzantine, Amazigh (Berber).
  • The fortress of Isabel II on the Mola Logo indicating a link to the website – located at the mouth of the port of Mahon, is an example of military architecture from the end of the 19th century. Built between the years 1850 and 1875, it was a strategic point in the defense of the port. The visit to the fortress of 2 km long takes three hours and the site regularly hosts various events such as stargazing and photography competitions.
