This region is made up of the following five states (wilāyāt) of Sudan:
- North Darfur (Shamal Darfur) —
- Central Darfur (Zalingei) —
- South Darfur (Janub Darfur) —
- West Darfur (Gharb Darfur) —
- East Darfur (Sharq Darfur) —
Urban centers
- Al `Atrun
- Al-Fashir - Capital of North Darfur and historic staging post for caravans.
- Ed Daein - Populous hilltop town in the south of the region and capital of East Darfur.
- Geneina - Capital of the Sudanese state of West Darfur.
- Kafia Kingi - Also known by the Arabic name of Hofrat Al-Nuhas which means "copper mine".

- Nyala - Capital of South Darfur.
- Tullus
- Zalingei - Capital of the Sudanese state of Central Darfur.
Other destinations
- Radom National Park (Al-Radom Reserve) - Located in the far south of the country on the border with Southern Sudan and with the Central African Republic.
