The name "Durango" comes from Francisco de Ibarra, conquistador Spanish who founded the city. He was from Eibar around the city of Durango in the province Basque of Vizcaya in Spain.
The state of Durango borders with the Chihuahua to the north, the Coahuila and the Zacatecas to the east, the Nayarit to the south, the Jalisco to the southwest as well as with the Sinaloa West. It is the fourth state in terms of area in Mexico.
