Place of pilgrimage Maria Weissenstein
  • 1 Welschnofen (1182 m),
  • 5 Harrow (1250 m)
  • 7 Karneid is the first star village in Europe and thus focuses on the sparkling and luminous celestial bodies that fascinate young and old every night. The town of 1,300 souls is located on a plateau in the heart of the Rosengarten-Latemar area with an unobstructed view of the sky. The location is ideal for observing the massive, self-luminous gas spheres. This is best done in the “Max Valier” observatory, South Tyrol's first and only public observatory. Anyone who wants to observe the sun - also a star in astronomy - has the opportunity to do so in the "Peter Anich" solar observatory. The rest of the universe is explained along the planetary path, using information points, sundials, in lectures, story evenings and the like. Children rise in star fairy tales, games and quizzes over the lights of the sky.

Tourist Attractions

Latemar: Eggentaler Horn

UNESCO World Natural Heritage Dolomites: Rosengarten and Latemar mountains:Karl Felix Wolff once said: "Even if South Tyrol had nothing more than the rose garden and the Laurin legend, it would already be one of the most wonderful countries as far as the German tongue sounds."

The mountains Rosengarten and Latemar as part of the Dolomites were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 26, 2009 and included in the list of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The United Nations, through its organization for education, science and culture, has thus emphasized and confirmed the peculiarity and uniqueness of the Dolomites. The Dolomites are the second world natural heritage area in Italy, next to the Aeolian Islands.

Karer See with Latemar
  • Karer See. The Karersee lies at an altitude of 1,520 meters and is approx. 300 m long and 130 m wide. The lake is fed by underground springs from the Latemar mountain range. The depth and size of the lake is very seasonal and weather-dependent, the greatest depth is given as 22 m. This mountain lake is best known for its soft, deep green water and the beautiful mountain scenery with the rose garden and Latemar in the background. There are many South Tyrolean legends surrounding the lake and many writers and painters chose the motif for their paintings and stories.
  • Museum Steinegg. The Steinegg Museum offers an excursion into Tyrolean history. The rural life, its roots in religion, the various almost forgotten craft trades, as well as the painful memories of the wars are only a part of the exhibits collected here, exhibited in old rooms, chambers and workrooms.

Karneid Castle:

Karneid Castle

Karneid Castle, the symbol of the municipality, stands imposingly above the Eggental Gorge. It was built around 1200 by Messrs. Greifenstein and is one of the most beautiful facilities in the country. The courtyard with its fountain, outside stairs and a two-storey loggia is particularly picturesque.

  • Observatory, solar observatory & planetarium. The observatory in Obergummer is the only star observation center in South Tyrol and is run by the Association of Amateur Astronomers Max Valier. The South Tyrol Planetarium is the only one of its kind in South Tyrol. In contrast to the observatory, here space is artificially represented in 3D with the help of optical precision instruments and accompanied by a sophisticated sound system.
  • St. Helena Church. Hill church from the 12th century in Nova Ponente. An easy hike through forest and meadows leads directly to the chapel; from the church hill you have a wide view over the Eggen forest to the Schlern, Rosengarten, Latemar, Zanggen, Schwarzhorn and Weißhorn. Wall paintings from the high Gothic period in the early 15th century are well worth seeing in the church.
  • Place of pilgrimage Maria Weissenstein. Maria Weissenstein (1520 m) is South Tyrol's most important place of pilgrimage. The flow of pilgrims has increased again especially since the visit of Pope John Paul II in July 1988. The collection of votive tablets in the large monastery complex is particularly worth seeing.

Geoparc Bletterbach:

Bletterbach

An 8 km long canyon into the interior of the mountains: the 400 m deep gorge near Aldein / Radein is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a journey through the history of the earth. Geo-trails, forest nature trails, guided hikes and the visitor center provide information.

In summer there is a network of 530 kilometers of marked trails for hikers and mountain bikers in Eggental, as well as climbing routes and two golf courses.

The ski areas in the region are Obereggen Ski Center Latemar and Carezza skis - both members of the Dolomiti Superski ski association. The statistics show a total of 88 kilometers of groomed slopes and around 100 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, 2 snow parks, 8 toboggan runs and numerous well-marked snowshoe and winter hiking trails.

kitchen

In Eggental there is the traditional South Tyrolean cuisine as a mixture of "Alpine and Mediterranean", there are down-to-earth, traditional dishes such as dumplings, ravioli and barley soup, pastries such as Strauben, Buchteln or apple cakes, as well as light, Mediterranean dishes.

Also typical is the Tyrolean "Marende", a snack in the afternoon, with mostly different types of bread, South Tyrolean bacon, smoked sausages and a glass of red wine being tasted.
