background

The western Dolomites are the more famous part of the Dolomites, on their western side they border the lower valley of the Eisack and the Sarntal Alps, on its north side to the South Tyrolean part of the Val Pusteria. The line is considered the south-facing border Trent- Val Sugana - FeltreThis is considered to be the border between the western and eastern dolmites Val Badia (also Abteital) and that Gordotal;

The highest mountain is the Marmolada (3,343m, Italian: Marmolada, Ladin: Marmoleda).

Geologically the western Dolomites consist of Schlern dolomite (eastern dolomites: Main dolomite): The weathering gives rise to the rock needles that are characteristic of the region. The color of the rock is rather grayish white in daylight, but in the glow of the evening the color of the mountains changes to a red-orange glowing from within, the rose garden is particularly famous for this.
