background

The Gadertal stretches around 35 km in length St. Lorenzen in the Val Pusteria to the south to the Sella group. The valley is quite narrow when approached from the north, but then widens noticeably towards the south.

The river gives its name to the valley system Gader, Ladin Ghaidra or Gran Ega for "Big Water", the Gader flows from south to north and flows into the Rienz in the Puster Valley at St. Lorenzen.

The oldest archaeological finds near the Passo Gardena prove the human presence in the period around 5000-7000 years before the turn of the times. Further archaeological finds at "Sotciastél" / St. Leonhard indicate that the region was settled by pre-Roman indigenous people (Celts) during the Bronze Age between the 16th and 13th centuries BC. Ch. Evidenced, it followed the rule of the Romans.

From 1027 the left side of the valley of the Gader belonged to the newly founded bishopric of Brixen, the right side of the valley belonged to the Pustertal county and thus to Tyrol, from 1803 the whole valley with Brixen became part of Tyrol.

During the First World War, the entire region of the Dolomites was the scene of the trench warfare between the Kaiserjäger on the Austrian / Tyrolean side and the opposing Italian Alpini. After the end of the war, the Val Badia was annexed by Italy in 1919 and connected to the Trentino.

Due to the remote location of the Val Badia, the Ladin language, also Rhaeto-Romanic, which is directly traced back to the Latin of the Romans, has survived into our times.

Pioneer for the modern tourism The k.u.k. major was in Val Badia Franz Kostner, a famous mountain guide who campaigned for the construction of new ski lifts in the valley in the 1930s. He also promoted the traffic engineering of the Gadertal by the "automobile company" he founded for tourist transport.

language

The valley is multilingual and with the Val Gardena One of the two Ladin valleys in South Tyrol: German and South Tyrolean are still spoken in the northern part, the Palfrad inn is the language and cultural border, and Ladin is spoken to the south. In the Ladin-speaking part, Ladin is also the regional official and school language, but German is mostly understood to some extent.
