The predominantly Ladin-speaking Fassa Valley (Lad .: Fascia, Italian: Val di Fassa) is located in the southern part of the Western Dolomites and thus belongs to the Trentino / Italy.

The Fassa Valley is the upper reaches of the river Avisio (a left tributary of the Adige) and extends from the region around the Sassolungo in the north and between the rose Garden and the Marmolada to the southwest. In the Middle Ages, the valley section belonged to the diocese of Brixen. Today the valley lies in the north-eastern part of Trentino and borders South Tyrol in the west and Veneto in the east.

The Avisiso River arises from the 1 Marmolada glacier at a height of approx. 2,057 m. It flows through the 2 Fedaiasee and on to Canazei in the Fassa Valley.

The lower reaches of the Avisio is that Fiemme Valley and belonged to the bishop of Trent in the Middle Ages.

The Fassa Valley is the only valley in Trentino where Ladin is still spoken today; the proportion of the Ladin-speaking population is around 65%.

getting there

  • The easiest way to get there from the north leads over the Brenner motorway, (A22), exit Egna-Ora (Neumarkt - Auer) and on the state road SS48 "Delle Dolomiti", through the Fiemme Valley (Val di Fiemme) in the Fassa Valley. Distance from the motorway exit to Moena at the entrance to the valley approx. 45 km.
  • Alternatively, you can travel from north also through that Val Gardena possible: Via the Brenner motorway, (A22), motorway exit Klausen / Gröden and further on the state road SS242 through the Val Gardena to the end of the valley and over the Sella Pass (2240 ​​m) to Canazei in the upper Fassatal. Distance from the motorway exit to Canazei approx. 42 km.
  • A direct one Rail connection there is no in the valley. From the train stations in Trent and in Bolzano there are bus routes to the "Val di Fassa".
