Background

The first mention of the town dates back to 1164, and relates to the consecration of the church to San Vigilio by the Prince Bishop of Trento Adelpreto. The tradition that Moena belongs before that date to the Episcopal Principality of Bressanone is not confirmed in the sources. At least since 1318 the town is aggregated to the Magnificent Community of Fiemme, within the Bishopric Principality of Trento and the German Confederation. After the secularization of the Principality in 1805, it was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria until 1810, and (after the Tyrolean insurrection led by Andreas Hofer) of the Kingdom of Italy until the Congress of Vienna, which reassigned all of the Tyrol toAustriaFollowing the First World War, it was occupied by Italian troops in November 1918 and was formally annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, with all the Trentino, in 1921.

What see

The parish church
  • 1 Archpriest Church of San Vigilio. It overlooks the built-up area; it was consecrated in 1164, only to be rearranged in Gothic style in 1533, a date that can be read on the keystone of the current presbytery. In the 17th century the presbytery was remodeled and the Carmine chapel was built; in the first half of the nineteenth century it was enlarged to cope with the increase in population. The current appearance dates back to 1929, based on a project by the architect Giovanni Tiella di Rovereto, which preserved the Gothic part and the primitive apse that form the current presbytery.
Both from the inside and from the outside you can see the ancient Gothic apse and the new construction divided into a series of side chapels with round arches. The interior has three naves. The Art Nouveau frescoes in the presbytery are by Carlo Donati (1931). On the left the fresco portrait of the parish priest Giovanni Iori and on the right the large wooden crucifix by Cirillo Dellantonio, an artist who left the mark of his versatility in the church. In fact, his are the drawings of the windows, the wooden panels of the portals, the symbols of the Evangelists on the side portal and the Annunciation in granite on the main one. The San Vigilio altarpiece is by Valentino Rovisi. Another altarpiece by Rovisi is located above the main portal and represents the consecration of the church by Blessed Adelpreto. In addition to two canvases depicting Saint Anthony and the Last Supper, Tiepolo's disciple also left a fresco on the vault of the Carmine chapel.
  • Church of San Volfango. Next to the church of San Vigilio stands the small church of San Volfango, which tradition has it as the oldest temple in Moena, built on a pagan place of worship. From an unspecified period (for some dating to 1025, for others later), it contains 15th century frescoes with scenes of the Passion and a fine baroque wooden ceiling, the work of Giovanni Guadagnini from Moen (17th century).
