Geographical notes
Trento is located in the Adige Valley between Verona is Bolzano, is crossed by the river Adige - coming fromSouth Tyrol - and from the Fersina stream - from the Mocheni valley. The city is a small knot between railways and roads: as regards the first Trento it is the intersection between the Brenner, Valsugana and Trento-Malé-Mezzana railways; as regards the latter, the Brenner state road (SS12), the Valsugana state road (SS47), the western Garda lake (SS45 bis) and the Asiago state road 349.
Background
Trento was founded in the middle of the 1st century BC. during the years of Caesar's military campaigns in Gaul. Its position was convenient, because on one side the square perimeter of the city was naturally defended by the Adige and on the opposite side by the right shoulder of the Fersina. the Via Claudia Augusta was outlined, which also crossed Trento, to facilitate the advance of the Roman legions commanded by generals Drusus and Tiberius for the campaigns respectively in Rezia and Norico. The period of greatest splendor occurred during the bishop's principality (1100- 1797), dependent on the Habsburg family. In the mid-sixteenth century the city was the seat of the Council of Trent, chosen because it was a geographical and cultural "bridge" between the Italian and German areas. Trentino, even attacking Trento by firing cannons from Dos Trento on the Buonconsiglio Castle and the prince-bishop was expelled. What had been the episcopal principality became part of the Tyrol in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Under the reign of Francesco Giuseppe, Tyrol was granted a strong autonomy and the mayors of Trento embarked on a policy of modernization of the city, which still remained medieval, and of urban Italianization.Durely affected by the First World War, Trento was annexed to Italy following the treaties of Versailles. With Fascism the region lost all forms of autonomy and underwent a massive urban planning work in the Fascist style. Starting in 1946 thanks to the work of Degasperi and Gruber, the region regained its traditional autonomy which allowed it to pass from a region with agriculture to subsistence and land of emigration to a region from a thriving economy and land of researchers.
