Background
In 1919 the Treaty of Saint Germain determined the separation from southern Tyrol assigned to theItaly and assigned the Bundesland Tyrol to the Republic of German Austria. There were several attempts to establish an autonomous state or annexation to the German Reich. In the 1920s, thanks to the construction of infrastructures (roads, railway lines, power plants) and the restart of tourism (construction of cable cars), the economy stabilized for a short period before the repercussions of the world economic crisis. In February 1934 there were some clashes between the Social Democratic Schutzbund and the government forces. On 12 March 1938 the German Heer invaded theAustria. The Gau Tirol-Vorarlberg was established and East Tyrol was assigned to the Gau Carinthia. As a result of the agreements between Hitler and Mussolini, about 70,000 people immigrated fromSouth Tyrol: half of these settled in specially created villages. After the war about a third of the immigrants returned to their places of origin. In 1943 there were allied bombings. When American troops entered Innsbruck on 3 May 1945, resistance organizations were able to propose a provisional government. 1945 Tyrol was part of the occupation zone French while East Tyrol belonged to that BritishIn 1947 East Tyrol was reunited with North Tyrol. On May 15, 1955, the last occupation troops left the country. In this period there was an economic recovery and the state passed from a predominantly agrarian economy to one based on industry and services. There was also an expansion of the tourism industry, and many roads and highways were built in the late 1950s. Innsbruck it was twice the site of the Winter Olympics (1964 and 1976). In the 1980s there was some criticism from the population about the effects of increased traffic and tourism. With the entry of Austria into the European Union in 1995 it was possible to set up the Euregio Tirolo-Alto Adige-Trentino to allow economic, cultural and political collaboration in the supranational area
