Geographical notes
It borders to the north with the regions of Oltradige-Bassa Atesina is Salto-Sciliar ofSouth Tyrol; to the east with the Primiero; south and west with Upper Valsugana is Lower Valsugana and Tesino.
With its 11 villages, it is bordered by famous mountains such as the Lagorai chain, the Pale di San Martino which includes the highest peak of the valley, the top of Vezzana (3,192 m a.s.l.) and the Latemar group. Furthermore, it is located in the middle of two natural parks: that of Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino and the South Tyrolean one of Monte Corno. Two parks close but different for the variety of flora and fauna. The entire Val di Fiemme can be defined as a real park, thanks to the vast extension of woods which, cultivated in a respectful way for centuries, have represented, especially in the past, a source of subsistence for the local population. for some decades now they have been expanding at the rate of about one hundred hectares per year) positively influencing the quality of the air and climate, also favored by the orientation of the valley, which stretches mainly from west to east. The typically alpine landscape della Val di Fiemme is characterized above all by the spruce that manages to develop a height of 50 meters, with specimens reaching a circumference of up to 6 meters and a trunk volume of 25/30 cubic meters: that is, what is needed to build a house.
Background
Belonging to the episcopal principality of Trento, Val di Fiemme in ancient times developed an original and very ancient institution of Lombard reminiscence which from 1100 to 1800 constituted a sort of small republic within the principality: the Magnificent Community of Fiemme. In Cavalese at the Pieve dell'Assunta, as evidence of the medieval institution, a circular artifact is still visible, the so-called banc de la rason where the fiemmazzi gathered in assizes to discuss and take civil decisions.
The Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme owns 20,000 hectares of FSC and PEFC certified forests. Its history, widely documented, allows us to trace the traditions and culture of the Val di Fiemme for almost a millennium.
