Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park is a protected area located in Trentino Alto Adige.

Geographical notes

The Park includes very different areas: in fact it includes the thirty part of the Dolomite group of the Pale di San Martino (which also extends into the province of Belluno), but also the eastern sector of the Lagorai massif, composed of magmatic rocks (for the most part porphyry). The park includes several valleys included in the district of Primiero:

  • a large part of the Vanoi valley, which coincides with the municipality of Canal San Bovo, crossed by the stream of the same name and surrounded by the Lagorai mountains;
  • Val Canali, access area to the southern chain of the Pale di San Martino, in the south-eastern part of the Park, with the lateral Val Pradidali;
  • there Val Venegia, in the area between Passo Rolle and Pian dei Casoni, in the Travignolo basin, at the foot of the major peaks of the Pale, Cimon della Pala and Vezzana.

It extends over part of the municipal territories of Tonadico, Siròr, Canal San Bovo, Predazzo, Moena, Mezzano, Imèr, Sagron Mis is Transacqua.

Flora and fauna

Fauna

The environment is rich in all the species present in the Alps: deer, chamois, roe deer, marmots, squirrels, foxes and badgers. The ibex has recently been reintroduced in the high mountain areas.

Flora

The vegetation of the park consists mostly of spruce, silver fir, larch, beech and stone pine. Famous is the Paneveggio spruce forest.

Background

Established with Provincial Law 12/09/1967 it is managed byPaneveggio-Pale di San Martino Park Authority.

Permits / Rates

The Park's activity takes place in four different locations:

  • The administrative headquarters and visitor center of Villa Welsperg in Val Canali;
  • The Paneveggio Visitor Center, dedicated to the famous spruce forest (the Forest of violins used for centuries up to the present day by violin makers for making violins) and to the fauna of the Park;
  • The San Martino di Castrozza Visitor Center, dedicated to climate, geology and paleontology;

The Visitor Center of Prà de Madègo, in the Vanoi valley, the starting point of the ethnographic path, which allows you to get to know the places that the inhabitants have animated and transformed in the past with their haymaking and breeding activities
