Tonadico, fraction of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.
To know
It was the capital of Primiero until January 1, 2016, when with Primiero Fair, Siror is Transacqua merged into the new municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, whose municipal seat is located in Fiera di Primiero.
Geographical notes
The territory of the hamlet is quite extensive (about 90 km²) and includes the extensive meadows, pastures and woods of Val Canali and Val Venegia, and a very large section of the peaks and the plateau of the Pale di San Martino. The Val Canali, crossed by the stream of the same name, represents the southern area of access to the Pale di San Martino group. At the Sabbionade locality, a side valley begins, the Val Pradidali, even wilder, which allows you to reach the refuge of the same name and the Pale plateau.
Most of the territory of the hamlet (74.5 km² out of 89) is included in the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural ParkThe origin of the toponym Tonadico is not clear, whose Celtic suffix in -icum suggests a settlement of late Roman times.
The country presents numerous historical evidences for having been the political center of the community of Primiero and of the captain who held the jurisdiction of Castel Pietra, perched north of the town marzollo di Tonadico (ie the burgomaster of the municipality) also had the privilege of guarding the statutes with which the community of Primiero was governed.
Tonadico was part of the possessions of the bishop of Feltre until 1349, when it became part of the Empire ofAustria, from which it broke away only at the end of the First World War. In 1401 Tonadico and the entire Primiero were handed over as a fief to the Welsperg family, originally from the Val Pusteria.
From 1 January 2016 it lost the role of administrative center of the Primiero becoming part of the new municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza with municipal headquarters in Primiero Fair.

What see
- Church of San Vittore. The small church, dating back to the 11th century, was built on the hill overlooking the town of Tonadico. It was dedicated to the Saints Vittore and Corona, patrons of Feltre, since in the Middle Ages Tonadico belonged to the Feltrine diocese. The recent restoration has allowed a precise dating, especially with reference to the ancient frescoes present.
- In fact, four different layers of paintings have emerged, each dating back to a different historical era. : The oldest, built in the thirteenth century, has typically medieval characters, with battles between armed knights on horseback in the lower register of the hall, while in the counter-façade there are allegorical representations of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
- Scopoli Palace. The building was built around the year 1000 with a probable function as a warehouse or warehouse for the community. Over the centuries it changed its function becoming an important representative building. It was in fact the residence of the bishop's vicar, as well as the building where the Statutes of Primiero were kept. In the fifteenth century it became the property of the Scopoli family, who enlarged and modernized it. The Scopoli, a wealthy family of notaries, had the interior rooms of the building frescoed and a private chapel built within the complex. After the restoration completed in 2003, the building became the municipal seat.
- Church of San Sebastiano. The parish church is dedicated to San Sebastiano. It was built in 1655 and has no bell tower. Enlarged in the early nineteenth century, it presents inside the main altar with the traditional Trentino wooden ciborium.
- Castel Pietra. It overlooks the town of Tonadico, being placed on an erratic boulder to the left of the state road for the Cereda pass, at the entrance to Val Canali.
- Formerly referred to as Castrum Petrae, the legend traces it back to the time of Attila, even if more probably it was erected under the bishops of Feltre in a strategic position for the defense of Primiero. It was first mentioned in 1273.
- Initially it was the seat of the captain of the bishop of Feltre, but from the fifteenth century it became the residence of the Welsperg family, feudal lords on behalf of the Habsburgs of the valley. Destroyed by the Venetians in 1511, it was partially rebuilt in 1565, but it still suffered fires and devastation and in 1675 it was completely abandoned. In 1865, a flood of the underlying Canali stream eroded part of the rock on which it rested, leading to a further collapse.
- The ruins, restored in the 1980s, are the property of Count Georg Siegmund Thun-Hohenstein-Welsperg.
- The ancient aspect of the castle can only be reconstructed through the representations of the period: with a quadrangular plan, it probably developed on two floors. In the lower part lived the lords and there was a large room and a private chapel dedicated to San Leonardo; above there were some factories (a mill, a sawmill and a forge) and the militia premises.
- To access the castle, use a suspended steel staircase that reaches the northern part of the rocky spur. Then you enter the building through a crack in the wall. Access is recommended only for experts with climbing equipment.
- There Val Canali it is characterized by the presence of numerous farms, in stone and wood used for the shelter of the cattle, the conservation of the hay and the life of the peasant family. The farms are traditionally composed of several units: the stable (stala), the barn (tabià) and the building reserved for the seasonal home of farmers (dairy).
