Geographical notes

San Martino is set in a green meadow valley, surrounded by the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park. Numerous Dolomite peaks are visible from the town: the large group of Pale di San Martino, heritage ofUNESCO, with the Cimon della Pala, the Vezzana (visible from the Passo Rolle area or from the plateau of the Pale), the Rosetta, the Sass Maor, the peaks of Val di Roda, the Cima della Madonna, and on the other side the most dolce della Cavallazza and the porphyry peaks of Colbricon and Colbricon piccolo. From the town it is also possible to see the group of the Feltrine peaks, with the characteristic pyramid-shaped peak of Mount Pavione.

Background

San Martino owes its origin to a very ancient religious institution, the hospice of Saints Martino and Giuliano, which welcomed travelers who crossed the Passo Rolle, on their way from Primiero to Val di Fiemme and viceversa. Now only the church of San Martino remains of the old hospice, with its Romanesque bell tower. The birth of San Martino di Castrozza as a tourist resort dates back to 1873, with the construction of the first alpine hotel which replaced the woodshed of the old hospice, on the proposal of the English mountaineer John Ball. In the first decade of the twentieth century, San Martino di Castrozza had already established itself as a tourist resort and was a place known by the good society of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The development of the station after the devastation of the First World War was very rapid, both in the sense of the hotel-accommodation structure and in that of the ski lifts and sports facilities.
