Background

Over the centuries, people who spoke Italian, others of the German language and others of the Slavic language, most likely Slovenes and Czechs, mingled in Canal San Bovo. We can still find this diversity of origins of the population of Canal San Bovo from the surnames of its inhabitants. It should be emphasized that populations from the Tyrol and from Vorarlberg as well as from Bohemia they reached the Vanoi Valley as miners (Bergknappen). There are numerous testimonies of the different cultures that have intertwined in the Vanoi, one of all a late sixteenth-century fresco in Caoria which portrays the Castle of Prague. Furthermore, the patron saint of Caoria is St. John of Nepomuk also patron of Bohemia.

After the middle of the 6th century, with the descent of the Lombards in the peninsula, the Vanoi Valley remained linked to Feltre for eight centuries. In 1373 the valley firmly entered the political orbit of Tyrol and in 1401 the Duke of Austria donated to George of Welsperg, of the Val Pusteria, the jurisdiction of the Valley. The dynasty of the Welsperg counts will rule the municipal territory for more than four centuries.Under the Welsperg dynasty the Valley enjoyed a remarkable economic and demographic growth, also due to the exploitation of the numerous mineral deposits in the area. 1809-1815) in which Canal San Bovo was annexed to the Napoleonic Italic Kingdom, and participated in the anti-French insurrection of Andreas Hofer with a corps of volunteers that went towards Feltre, returned Austrian again in 1815 and therefore an integral part of the County of Tyrol. The link with the House of Habsburg will remain strong until the end of the First World War, in 1918. The entire territory of Canal San Bovo was one of the most tragic theaters of the Great War, fought between Italians and Austrians on the peaks of the cantena del Lagorai.

Numerous floods hit the Vanoi Valley, some of which, in the 19th century, were truly terrible. The last one that stands out is that of 1966, which significantly changed the face of the Valley. Many inhabitants emigrated and the agricultural economy was slowly abandoned. Linked to the floods, landslides also played a significant role in the history of the valley. Of particular note are those of the Rio Rebrùt (right tributary of the Vanoi between Caoria and Canal San Bovo). In 1823 one of these gave rise to a small lake which lasted shortly. Two years later (1825) a larger landslide blocked the Vanoi stream, giving rise to a larger lake, Lago Nuovo. The first rupture of the lake occurred in 1826, which led to the destruction of the Ponte and Remesori hamlets with 52 victims. In 1882, after numerous floods, it yielded the natural bank of the lake which, emptying itself completely, disappeared. A testimony of the lake can be found on a fresco (partly ruined) on an old house, once "Osteria al Lago", along the road that leads from Canal San Bovo to Caoria.

What see

  • Church of Saints Bartolomeo Apostolo and Bovo Confessor. It was designed by the Friulian engineer Leopoldo de Claricini and consecrated in 1852 after the destruction, in the flood of 1829, of the old archpriest located downstream from the current town of Canal San Bovo. In Baroque style, it preserves valuable works from the old church such as the organ from 1777, the work of the famous organ builder Gaetano Callido remodeled by Lingiardi; the monumental high altar of 1714, in gilded wood, houses a decent tabernacle in gilded iron from 1595 enclosed in the wooden one. The altar is the only one that exists in the archdiocese of Trento. The stained glass windows behind the main altar depict San Bartolomeo Apostolo and San Bovo and were executed ad Innsbruck. In the choir hangs the ancient wooden icon of 1647 representing the two patron saints.
  • Mural paintings. There are numerous murals depicting sacred images in the Valley. Among the most interesting is that of Crucifixion with offerer in Caoria. It is dated 1585 and represents the Crucifixion, with the Madonna and San Giovanni Minore. In the background there is a castle town, with the inscription Prague. Other interesting murals with sacred subjects can be found in Prade and Zortea, in Canal San Bovo and in Ronco. : All dating from 1600 to the end of the nineteenth century. Wooden huts and farms with characteristic roofs in going down (small pieces of larch) constitute a great heritage of Alpine architecture. : Many farms are built with the block-bau technique: the external walls of farms and barns are built with logs interlocked with each other and, often, neither nails nor other fastening systems are used.
