Sagron Mis is a municipality of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

The inhabitants are popularly called dumplings: once a derogatory nickname (meaning "gnocchi") given by the Primiero, it is now proudly worn by the inhabitants as it represents their identity. In the past the town was known for its chair makers, characterized by wide blue velvet trousers, who went around the villages to arrange the chairs. They often migrated to European countries, especially France.

Geographical notes

It is located in the Trentino eastern border with Veneto. Despite being located in the Mis valley (belonging to the Piave river basin) and not in the Cismon one (included in the Brenta basin), Sagron Mis has always been considered part of the Primiero, to which he refers as regards the administration and services.

The inhabited centers of the Municipality are dominated to the north-east by the southern buttresses of the Pale di San Martino (subgroup of Croda Granda, with the top of Oltro, 2397 m, the Rocchette, 2,309 m, and Mount Feltraio 2,295 m), while to the south rises the Cimonega Group with the Piz di Sagron (2,486 m, the maximum altitude).

Background

The history of human settlement in this town has recent origins: up to the sixteenth century in fact the territory was completely covered by woods, later demolished by the Carbonari. The large pastures obtained allowed the formation of a first settlement at the end of the sixteenth century and, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, a church was built in Sagron.Later, the traditional peasant activities were joined by the extractive ones, thanks to the gold and mercury mines , sulphide and cinnabar, however the development of the area was always hindered by isolation and by uncomfortable communication routes. In the nineteenth century the depressed agricultural economy and the exhaustion of mines forced many inhabitants to abandon their land to look for work elsewhere ( Mostly in France and the Americas). The main activity exported by emigrants to Europe was chair craftsmanship and its workers, in the Careghete dialect, were able to communicate with each other through an idiom of their own invention, also known by the chair makers of Gosaldo: the scabelament dei conza. In the second post-war period, seasonal emigration was directed towards the construction sites of the Switzerland for the construction of major works.
