Cavalese is a city of Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

It is the main center of the Val di Fiemme, of which it is the administrative capital.

Background

The origins of Cavalese are attested in the late Bronze Age thanks to the presence of a prehistoric fortified castle. The Romanization of the place is further confirmed by the discovery of some ancient coins and by the presence of a necropolis from the 6th century.

The town has developed since the 12th century, when mills, sawmills and blacksmith workshops were built along the banks of the Gambis stream for working copper. Starting from the year 1000 the Fiemme Valley was ruled by the prince-bishops of Trento, but enjoyed the wide autonomy represented by the Magnificent Community.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Cavalese became a holiday resort for the bishops and nobles of Trentino, who had their palaces built there. The Palazzo dei Vescovi would later become, in the nineteenth century, the seat of the Magnifica Comunità.In the eighteenth century it was a center of interest for the presence of the painting school of Giuseppe Alberti, in which Michelangelo Unterperger also learned the art.

In the last century there was a great development of construction and tourism, with the construction of numerous hotels and new communication routes. In the Second World War, during the Nazi occupation, Cavalese was the scene of clashes of the Resistance movement. after the war Cavalese developed well beyond the terrace-slope, reaching the gates of the neighboring villages. In 1998 a ski resort near Cavalese was the unfortunate place where the Cermis massacre took place.

How to get around

What see

  • 1 Church of San Vigilio. Emperor Leopold I and his consort Eleonora competed for its furnishings. On the large tympanum of the main facade, above the entrance, there is a fresco by Antonio Longo depicting San Vigilio. The church was consecrated in 1698. The interior of the church reflects the austere Franciscan forms and has three seventeenth-century wooden altars, of which the main one houses the large altarpiece by Giuseppe Alberti. Also by this painter are all the paintings in the church. Outside there is a cloister - in which there are three sundials, the oldest of which dates back to 1692 - and a garden where there is a meteorological observatory installed in 1882 by decision of the Municipality of Cavalese.
Palace of the Magnificent Community
  • Palace of the Magnificent Community (along the state road 48 of the Dolomites). In the upper part of the city there are numerous noble residences, including the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità; at his side stands the Civic Tower, a symbol of the city's administrative autonomy. The Palace was built in the Middle Ages at the behest of the bishops of Trento in order to give a seat to their vicars in Val di Fiemme and as a possible summer residence. The Community coat of arms is accompanied by the inscription that summarizes the historical events of the Palace: the original 12th century project was enlarged in the Renaissance and in 1810 it became the seat of the Magnificent Community; it was restored between 1935 and 1938. The coat of arms consists of six red and white bands surmounted by a cross and was granted to the community in 1588 by Cardinal Ludovico Madruzzo. The interior of the palace is interesting for its Renaissance movements. On the ground floor were the prisons; on the first floor there were the offices of the General Community of Fiemme; on the second floor there are the picture gallery and the Fiemme museum; finally there is the Community archive, which includes numerous parchments from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. There Tower it was raised in 1805 on a design by Antonio Longo and in 1830 the engineer Dalbosco designed the crowning above the clock, which had been damaged by lightning. In the tabernacle, at the foot of the Tower, there is the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, placed there in 1739 to protect from the floods of the Gambis river.
  • Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. It is located in the lower part of the city - the oldest - surrounded by the large "Parco della Pieve", in a corner of which, at the foot of a centuries-old lime tree, you can see some stone benches arranged in a circle around a table, also in stone: it is the so-called "Banc de la Reson" ("Banco della Reason"), a place where the vicar of the bishop of Trento periodically administered justice.
