Today the municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Colmar and the canton of Wintzenheim.
history
A fort must have been here in Roman times. The moated castle, which has been rebuilt and still exists today, was built by Duke Eberhard in 720. It was named after his cousin Egeno. It got its octagonal appearance in the times of the Stauffer. Unfortunately, large parts of the castle buildings were demolished in the 19th century, including the octagonal keep. A neo-Romanesque-Byzantine chapel was built in its place in 1889 in memory of Pope Leo IX. built.
Pope Leo IX, who ascended the Holy See in 1048, was born here in the castle as Count Bruno von Egisheim (1002-1054).
