This peaceful little village, next toAndlau, is nestled at the foot of the hillside hosting the Grand Cru Moenchberg, on the edge of the Vosges mountains.
The coat of arms and the name of the town, "Eiche" which means oak, indicate the same origin. Eichhoffen, cited for the first time in the 11th century, is a former possession of the Bishopric of Strasbourg, but the Abbey ofAltorf there were important properties, notably the state courtyard and the Saint Jean-Baptiste chapel. Eichhoffen has only had its own church since 1865. It is dedicated to Saint Andrew and was built on plans drawn up in 1863 by the architect Jehu de Strasbourg. It houses a very beautiful statue, The Virgin and Child from the second half of the 18th century.e century, belonging to the type of golden and silver Virgins, acquired throughout the century by the parishes and Marian brotherhoods for the processions of the day of the Assumption.
The vines cover most of the communal ban. This results from an ancestral practice developed by the monks of the abbey ofAltorf, especially in Moenchberg, which means "Mont des moines".
If Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, it is the humanist Mathias Ringmann born in Eichhoffen in 1482 who gave the name to this continent.
