To know
Located along the Atlantic coast, between Casablanca ed Essaouira, El Jadida is a famous destination for the Portuguese fortress and its medina with its riads transformed into tourist accommodation. The best beaches are located 5 km away.
Background
THE Portuguese they built a fortress there which they baptized Mazagão with the aim of offering a safe stopover to the canals that went from the motherland to the possessions in Africa and in India. They were displaced by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah after a siege that lasted a few days.
The Portuguese left for the Brazil where they founded the colony of Nova Mazagão, their place was taken by Jewish merchants who settled inside the fortress with the permission of the sultan. The city expanded thanks to the commercial initiative of the newcomers but at the time of the domination French entered into a phase of decline due, above all, to the opening of the new port of Casablanca, a hundred kilometers further north.
