En Bokek (also A bokek or A Boqeq, Hebrew עין בוקק) is a place on Israeli coastline of Dead sea. It is the largest seaside resort on the west coast of the salt lake with a wide range of hotels, beaches and spas, but apart from that it has hardly anything to offer. As a tourist passing through, you will most likely go to En Bokek for a stopover for a swim in the Dead Sea, but the public beach section is very inviting.

Map of En Bokek

background

En Bokek is located on the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea and thus on the southern part of the inland lake, which has now been divided into two halves. This part is also used to extract minerals and salt and is therefore kept at a constant level by pumps. In contrast to the northern half, the slow drying up of the Dead Sea is hardly noticeable in En Bokek. On the other hand, you can see more salt encrustations here on the banks, because the height of the water level changes only slightly and the salt therefore always crystallizes in the same bank areas.

The place is the largest spa and tourist center on the west bank; it consists practically only of hotels, bathing establishments and tourist facilities such as shopping centers. Because of a warm mineral spring, there were health resorts here since ancient times. If you are staying at the Dead Sea for a cure, e.g. because of skin diseases, you are often accommodated in En Bokek.

Due to its location at an altitude of approx. 400 meters below sea level, it is one of the deepest freely accessible places on earth.

Practical advice

anecdote Swimming in the Dead Sea
In the highly salty water of the Dead Sea, the buoyancy is so great that you swim without doing anything yourself. Here are some "technical information": Because of the sharp-edged salt crust, it is best to wear bathing shoes and bathing trunks that have seen their best days (salt ruins a lot). With open wounds, there may be a strong burning sensation when immersed in water. It is better to refrain from jumping, making hasty movements and splashing around, under no circumstances rub your eyes or even pick your nose ... - Children under the age of 12 are generally not allowed by the bathing supervisor. The easiest way is to go slowly into the deeper water (possibly near a rope or rod) and sit comfortably in the water, when it has reached chest height, like in an armchair, then let yourself tilt back a little and lie down into the water and raise your legs. Only in a second step can you try to turn into the prone position (gives a feeling like a bath duck ...). Secondary school is swimming with the newspaper spread out for those who stayed at home for the obligatory photo, which should not get wet on the way into the water. Since it is a bit exhausting to lift your head out of the water while lying on your back, a inflatable neck pillow proven for optimal bathing enjoyment.

Be careful for individual travelers: in the whole area of En Bokek this is Parking for a fee. Even if the parking lot looks like a construction site due to the construction activity, parked vehicles are checked for tickets from the machine. If you get caught with a parking bus, you can pay for it in any post office.
