THE'Enclave of the Popes is a part of the department of Vaucluse, to the north of it, totally included in the department of Drome.

Understand

Pontifical possessions, Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin were attached to France on September 14, 1791. the March 28, 1792 , these territories formed two new districts, Avignon in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Carpentras in the Drome.

the August 12, 1793 was created the department of Vaucluse, made up of the districts of Avignon and Carpentras, but also those ofApt and D'Orange, which belonged to Bouches-du-Rhône, as well as Township of Sault, which belonged to Basses-Alpes.

In 1800, there was a modification of the departmental boundaries, Suze-la-Rousse being attached to the Drome, which resulted in the isolation of the Vaucluse canton of Valréas, which then became the Enclave des Papes).
