Story
The origin of Valréas dates back to the beginning of Charlemagne's empire around the 9the century when a certain Valère had to set up his domain on the banks of the Coronne. It is this first owner who gave his first name to this place Valeriacum which, over time and transformations, will give Valréas. It is the junction of this large estate, erected on the hill on which the present city is built, with a priory dedicated to Saint Vincent attached to the abbey of Cruas, which gave birth to the first town.
In the XIIIe century, the lords of Ripert built the castle (Castrum Riperti) which became the stronghold of the barons of Montauban-Mévouillon. the , Wednesday of Holy Week, a little Christian woman is found dead in Valréas. This gives rise to one of the earliest accusations of a ritual crime against the Jews. Jews from Valréas were immediately arrested, tortured and burnt at the stake. Subsequently, other Jews in the region are also persecuted and it takes the intervention of Pope Innocent IV to stop this outbreak of anti-Judaism.
In 1317, Pope John XXII bought Valréas from Humbert de Montauban and placed it under the authority of the States of the Holy See. Benoît XII founded the Haut-Comtat Judicature in 1334 and attached Valréas to it. Between 1349 and 1351, the noble Guillaume Molleti, judge of Forcalquier (1344), was judge and viguier of Valréas5, criminal judge and major cases of Comtat Venaissin from 1351 to 1356.
In 1562, the city was taken and plundered by Baron des Adrets and its defenders were massacred. The Catholic troops of the Count of Suze came to the town's rescue. Religious unrest continued for nearly a quarter of a century until 1586 with the pacification of the Duke of Épernon.
Pontifical possessions, Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin were attached to France on . the , these territories formed two new districts, Avignon in Bouches-du-Rhône and Carpentras in Drôme.
the The department of Vaucluse was created, made up of the districts of Avignon and Carpentras, but also those of Apt and Orange, which belonged to the Bouches-du-Rhône, as well as the canton of Sault, which belonged to the Basses- Alps.
In 1800, there was a modification of the departmental limits, Suze-la-Rousse being attached to the Drôme, which resulted in the isolation of the Vaucluse canton of Valréas, which then became the Enclave des Papes). Around 1840, Ferdinand Revoul created cardboard boxes in Valréas to meet the demand of Meynard, a Valréassien sericulture producer.
Dieulefit and Valréas did not have electricity in 1888. To facilitate local crafts and industry (pottery and cardboard), these two towns decided to set up an electrical factory. It was the Lez, a river flowing 5 kilometers from Dieulefit, which was chosen to provide the hydraulic power. In April of this year, the company Lombard-Gerin et Cie, from Lyon, was responsible for lighting the two cities. To do this, she bought an old mill in Béconne in order to set up a factory there. By contract, 115 lighting lamps were provided for Dieulefit and 230 for Valréas. What was done on .
The Béconne plant had used the infrastructure of the mill, including the bypass channel which drained water into a 13,000 m3, thus creating a drop from a height of 25 meters. This made it possible to operate two turbines with a power of 45 kW which rotated at 180 rpm. They were connected to an electric line, one for Dieulefit, the other for Valréas.
In 1897, the Nyons-Pierrelatte railway line reached the city and Valréas took the opportunity to develop its industry and thus became the world capital of cardboard packaging.
During the First World War, during the year 1916, the city received an instruction center for cadets of various weapons.
During World War II, the , 53 resistance fighters were executed (Mur des executed). Their bodies will be taken to the chapel of the white penitents.
