Geographical notes
It geographically coincides with the White Nile basin, from the Nuba Mountains to those Ugandans and from the Nile-Congo watershed to the buttresses Ethiopians.
Background
On May 26, 1871, Samuel White Baker proclaimed the annexation to GondokoroEgypt of the lands south of the 12th parallel, baptizing them with the name of Equatoria.
Gondokoro, near the current one Juba, was founded in 1851 by Austrian religious, who set up a mission there. It was the first known outpost on the Nile upstream from the swamps of the Sudd.
During the Mahdi revolt (1881-1889) this region found itself detached from the rest of Sudan in revolt.
