Tourist Attractions

Churches

  • 1  Evangelical Church Rückingen, Hauptstrasse 27, 63526 Erlensee. The Protestant church in Rückingen dates back to 1901 and replaces an older chapel nearby, of which nothing has survived today.

Castles and Palaces

  • 2  Rückingen moated castle, At the Wasserburg 20, 63526 Erlensee. The moated castle is the oldest surviving structure in Rückingen. It was first mentioned in 1248 and was the seat of the local princes. Despite being destroyed several times, the main building and the curtain wall have largely been preserved, only the originally existing moat has recently been filled. The local history association with a small local museum is located in the moated castle.
  • 3  Castle, Hauptstrasse 39, 63526 Erlensee. The little castle is the remnant of what was once a large manor. The local princes had this built after they were forbidden by the King of the Holy Roman Empire from owning a palace or castle. Structurally, there are actually two buildings: the western building with the striking stair tower is owned by the city and is used by associations, the eastern building (Brückenstraße 38) houses a primary school. The only other remaining building is the Zehntscheune (Brückenstraße 55a).

Buildings

  • 4  Roman bath. In Rückingen there was an important Roman fort to secure the Limes in antiquity. The ruins of the associated Roman baths were discovered during excavations, were uncovered and can be viewed and entered today. They are embedded in a large playground area that should be a lot of fun, especially for younger travelers.
  • Of the Local fortification Langendiebach only two defense towers are left today (5 Northern defense tower, 6 Southern defense tower) They probably date from the 15th century and served to protect the place on the border of the Isenburg county. Occasionally, remains of the old town wall are found during excavations, but a systematic archaeological investigation has not yet taken place.
