Map of Langenselbold

Originally known as Selbold and first mentioned in a document in 1108, the place was the seat of an important medieval monastery with extensive property in the area and in the rest of the Rhine-Main area. At the end of the Middle Ages, the monastery was doomed and was inherited by the Counts of Isenburg-Birstein, who shaped the townscape significantly with the construction of the castle, among other things.

The Gründau flows through its location and flows into the city's second river, the Kinzig, just behind the village. The Kinzig is known for its regular flooding, especially when the snowmelts (January to March). The normal roads are usually not affected by flooding, but especially cycle paths as well as field and forest paths can be ankle-deep under water after heavy rain and / or thaw.

For historical reasons, the division into the Hinserdorf between Gründau and the castle and the upper village on the western slope of the vineyard. The oldest preserved buildings in the city can also be found in these "germ cells", including some interesting half-timbered buildings. Politically, however, Langenselbold forms a coherent locality without any districts.

Langenselbold is today in a kind of conflict: on the one hand, the city is mainly a commuter community for employees in Hanau and Frankfurt as well as a not insignificant industrial location, on the other hand, the place is also strongly agricultural with countless resettler farms scattered all around the city, and last but not least, Langenselbold also offers appropriate shopping opportunities a city of this size. Due to the Spessart in the south, Langenselbold is also suitable as a starting point for hikes, especially through the train station directly on the northern slope. In this respect, Langenselbold is "a little bit of everything".

Langenselbold Castle in the Wikipedia encyclopediaLangenselbold Castle (Q2242045) in the Wikidata database. In the 18th century, the Counts of Isenburg-Birstein had a stately castle built on a hill above the city, formerly the site of the lost medieval monastery. Six buildings are lined up around an inner courtyard, which was originally laid out as a baroque garden. After the Second World War, the town of Langenselbold acquired the entire complex, and the princes of Isenburg-Birstein have lifelong right of residence in the castle to this day. The former fruit store is now the city hall, the manor house houses the city library and event rooms. The other buildings will include used by the town's local museum and by an inn.
