Understand
Spanish, one of the Romance languages, is the third most spoken language in the world. It has considerable similarities to other Romance languages such as to Portugal, to France, Italy and to Romania.
Say it
Spanish is quite easy for Finns to pronounce, because like Finnish, it is a phonetic language in which each letter usually corresponds to a certain sound.
Vowels
Vowels are pronounced as in Finnish with the following exceptions:
- y, is pronounced as i (e.g. hay [Oh])
- ñ, is pronounced nj (e.g. Spain)
- c which is a, o, u: in front is pronounced k as a letter
- z is usually s
Consonants
In Spanish, there are three consonants formed by two letters (ch, ll, rr). In addition to these, the ñ consonant differs from Finnish.
Emphasis
Usually in the second to last syllable of the word, unless the apostrophe indicates another place.
