South America - Etelä-Amerikka

The location of South America on Earth.

South America is a continent North America south between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It consists of 12 different states and has a population of about 371,000,000.

South America is known for its Native American cultures, some of which are believed to have been quite advanced. Indians are considered the indigenous people of the continent. Since the 16th century, immigrants (Europeans and Portuguese) with a European background have entered the area, bringing with them African slaves.

It is worthwhile for a tourist to learn a little Spanish, as thanks to European immigrants, the official language in most South American countries is Spanish. The most notable exception is Brazil, whose official language is Portuguese. There is also some different talk in South America Native American languages.

In the western part of South America lies the thousands of kilometers of Andes Mountains, the shape of which follows the seashore.

The best way to get around South America is by bus. It is practically accessible cheaply and conveniently, without having to book in advance anytime, anywhere. The exception is the Amazon region. However, the distances are huge. However, domestic flights are generally expensive and should be booked in advance.

Talk

Almost everywhere in South America is spoken Spanish, with the exception of Brazil where we speak Portugal and small lands on the north coast Guyana (English), Suriname (Dutch) and French Guiana (France). Doing business in English outside of "tourist destinations" is tricky - so get acquainted with the basics of Spanish or Portuguese before you travel. Note that the Spanish and Portuguese dialects of South America differ from the European "standard" Spanish and Portuguese.
