background

The North Sea resort of Fedderwardersiel is the capital of Germany Crab fishing. The small harbor is home to a number of shrimp cutters that fish the shallow North Sea coast for crabs. The small animals, called "garnets" here, are cooked at sea and then arrive in the harbor at high tide. Here you can buy the animals fresh from the cutter and then have to peel them yourself, as they say. If you are there when the shrimp cutters arrive, you can get good prices, but also buy the bycatch cheaply. Quite a few corn plaice have changed hands here for little money.
