It was built between 1888 and 1892 according to the plans of General Brialmont. Unlike the French forts built during the same period by Raymond Séré de Rivières, it was built entirely with unreinforced concrete, a new material for the time, rather than masonry. The fort was heavily bombed during the First World War during the Battle of Liège as well as at the start of the Second World War.
