Esneux is a municipality of Belgium located in Wallonia in the province of Liège and being part of the ten municipalities making up theLiège agglomeration. It is also a constituent part of the tourist region "Ourthe-Vesdre-Amblève ».
Understand
Apart from the two towns of Tilff and Esneux, the town has 15 towns or hamlets which are: Amostrenne, Avister, Chaply, Cortil, Fêchereux, Flagothier, Fontin-Hamay, Ham, Hony, La Gombe, La Haze, Méry, Montfort , Souverain-Pré and Sur-le-Mont.
The 34,05 km2 of area are occupied by more than 41% of woods and forests and nearly 29% of agricultural land (mainly vast meadows). Apart from a small industrial and craft activity park in Méry and a DIY and construction materials wholesaler in Esneux, socio-economic activity is centered on tourism. In addition to the classic walks on foot or by bicycle and the nautical activities favored by the presence of the Ourthe river, the practice of extreme sports such as mountaineering, speleology and scuba diving in the quarry are also possible. If the presence of many campsites attracts many Belgians and Dutch during the summer holidays, it is also one of the favorite day trips for Liegeois and the Dutch from the south of Limburg province ; Tilff is less than 45 kilometers and to 40 min by car from Maastricht.
The town also attracts many people from Liège wishing to settle outside the city. Several residential areas such as Sur-le-Mont, which also hosts many students from theuniversity of Liege, at the “Bois des Chevreuils” in Cortil, Avister, Hony, Hamay and Amostrenne were born.
In addition to its membership in the Ourthe-Vesdre-Amblève Tourist Office, Esneux has a tourist office and a tourist office:

Story
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cc/Bechete_(Tilff).jpg/220px-Bechete_(Tilff).jpg)
It is only since the merger of the municipalities, the , that the two main villages, Tilff and Esneux, saw their destiny become common. Before 1795 and the annexation of all the territories of present-day Belgium by the French Republic, they were even located in two different states. Tilff and Méry were part of the principality of Liège while Esneux and all the other hamlets were one of the seven “seigneuries beyond the woods” dependent on the Duchy of Limbourg.
Due to the presence of natural caves, such as the Nutons hole or the Chawresse abyss and its underground network of approximately 10 kilometers, the valley of the Ourthe has been occupied by man since the Magdalenian. After the invasion of Gaul Belgium by the Romans, they apparently never established a land domain (villa rustica) on the current territory of Esneux, far from all Roman roads. However, the caves again played their protective role for all those who fled from the Romans. The Eburons, Celtic people of which it was the territory, have, moreover, remained for a long time rebellious to the power of Rome.
Although its first known written designation dates from 1235, the oldest locality of the current commune would be Tilff, founded, like many others, in IIIe century by Cedros, the fourth king of Tongeren.
Until the beginning of XIXe century, the whole of the current commune remains rather poor in income for its inhabitants. The main resources are the cultivation of rye, barley and oats, the soil being too poor for the cultivation of wheat but, on the Tilff side, and with the agreement of the Prince-Bishop of Liège, we find also market gardening, including leeks. The cattle are few and only constitute a complement for their owner; fishing is also a complement, but more appreciable than cattle. Another activity is the extraction of limestone and sandstone, in underground quarries first and, later in the south of the town, in the open, such as the Bel Pierre quarry which is the last in activity in Esneux. In addition to this extraction, several lime kilns produce quicklime and slaked lime for the industrial basin of Liège.
Before the inauguration, in 1857, of the lateral canal of the Ourthe between Angleur and Comblain-au-Pont, the river transport of goods and passengers is carried out using flat-bottomed boats called beasts with a maximum tonnage of 10 tons. After this commissioning, navigation is also carried out with larger boats, called hèrnas, fitted with a central deckhouse to accommodate sailors and barges of up to 40 tons. This increase in capacity facilitates the transport of raw materials to the Liège industries and allows the establishment, in Tilff, of a zinc rolling mill of the Vieille-Montagne Zinc Mines and Foundries Company. But, the real rise of Esneux only comes with the inauguration, the , of the railway line Angleur - Marloie (the current line 43 of the SNCB) which makes it a renowned resort. The introduction of the first paid holidays in 1936 further accentuated this trend with the possibility for Liège workers, by train or by bicycle, to afford an easily accessible change of scenery.
On the side of tragedies, the two world wars also brought their lot to the town. the , the imperial German army shoot 20 civilians and destroy 25 houses in Esneux. the , an American army truck accidentally fell into the lock of the Ourthe side canal in Esneux and drowned twelve of its occupants.

By bike
There are no roads or streets with any provision for cyclists. If you are traveling in the Ourthe valley, it will be preferable to take one of the bike-routes RV7 or RV8. The effort to provide in this valley is not the most physical. On the other hand, if you have to access the top of the slopes, the hills can be very trying with occasional gradients that can be around 15%. Two of these hills are also famous in the world of road cyclists: the coast of la Roche-aux-Faucons and the Cortil coast.
If needed, two shops in Esneux sell bicycles and accessories for cyclists. In addition, one of them can repair your bike or rent one from you.
