Forni di Sopra is a center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To know

The town's economy is mainly based on tourism: today it is a well-known destination for summer and winter tourism, one of the main mountain tourist centers of the Friuli Venezia Giulia, thanks to the landscape of rare beauty and excellent alpine ski slopes (especially those located on the southern side of Varmost) and cross-country skiing.

Forni di Sopra for its particular attention to promoting sustainable tourism with soft mobility is included in the consortium of Pearls of the Alps.

It is also part of the club dei Authentic villages of Italy.

Geographical notes

The town dominated by the Friulian Dolomites rises in the upper Val Tagliamento, in the Alpine region of Carnia, on the left bank of the river.

The inhabited areas are dominated by the splendid Dolomite peaks of the Cridola mountains (2,581 m) and Monfalconi to the west, Pramaggiore (2,478 m) to the south-west and the peaks of the Bivera mountains (2,473 m), Clap Savon (2,462 m) and Clap Varmost ( 2,073 m) to the north-east. Part of the municipal area is included in the Natural Park of the Friulian Dolomites.

Background

Of Celtic origins, the first document attesting the existence of Forni di Sopra was erroneously dated 778 AD; it concerns instead Forni Avoltri as here there were mining activities on Mount Avanza. It has long been considered distinct from the rest of the Carnia, for its dependence on the Savorgnan family, who received it, as well as the neighbor Forni di Sotto, by the patriarchs of Aquileia. Hence the name of Savorgnani ovens used to name this part of the valley.

Church of San Giacomo
Church of San Vito
  • 1 Church of San Floriano, via Nazionale 133 (to Cell). The church was documented for the first time in 1308 in a deed of sale, but was definitively completed in 1445. It was completely renovated in the seventeenth century and the nave was lengthened. At the request of the deputy Gregorio Valle, the church was declared a national monument in 1903. Damaged by the 1976 Friuli earthquake, it was restored; other minor works were carried out in 2009.
In the apse frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo dating back to around 1504 represent Saints and Doctors of the Church. There is also the colorful Polyptych of San Floriano by Andrea Bellunello, bearing the artist's signature and dating from 1480, with a tricuspid frame and in the center the colorful figure of San Floriano, which is linked to contemporary Venetian Renaissance painting. The central part depicts St. Florian in a knightly robe holding a model of a burning castle. On the sides are represented some saints, while in the upper center the scene of the Resurrection of Christ and on the sides the Annunciation.
  • 2 Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The first mention of a church in Forni di Sopra dates back to 1205; the parish of Forni di Sopra was established in 1445. In 1776 the construction of the bell tower began, completed only in 1860. In 1835 the construction works of the current parish began, completed five years later and consecrated in 1849.
Valuable works preserved inside the church are a 1946 fresco depicting the Saints Martyrs Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia, by Fred Pittino; the wooden crucifix dating back to the fifteenth century; the high altar, built by Elia D'Aronco and embellished with statues by Celestino Pochero; the baptismal font of 1564 and the altar with doors with the statues of the Madonna with Child, of Saints Maurizio, Gregorio Magno, Cristo in Pietà, Lorenzo, Vito, Sebastiano, Giovanni Battista, Giacomo and Rocco.
The bell tower, built between 1776 and 1860, is the highest in the Carnia and was made with local stone by local stonecutters. Church of Santa Maria Assunta (Forni di Sopra) on Wikipedia church of Santa Maria Assunta (Q27987224) on Wikidata
  • 3 Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, via San Giacomo. It is ascertained that a small church was built in Vico in the 14th century, although the first document attesting its presence dates back to 15 March 1449. The current church, which incorporates a small part of the previous one, was built in 1461, as attested by a inscription that reads: "This church was built on the last day of May 1461". About thirty years later, more precisely in 1492, the building was restored and remodeled and in the 16th century the bell tower was added to the church. In 1767 the presbytery was built and the church was consecrated on 11 August 1779. Finally in 1996 the roof was rebuilt.
Valuable works preserved inside the church are some remains of frescoes by Bellunello, the high altar of 1820, the altarpiece of 1748 with the Madonna and Child with Saints James the Apostle, Rocco, Giovanni Nepomuceno and Francesco d'Assisi, several frescoes by Giovanni Moro dating back to 1931. • 4 Church of Saints Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia (to Andrazza). It is known that in 1626 the inhabitants of Andrazza asked to be able to build a church in their village. The request was accepted and the building was built and consecrated in 1637. In 1742 a fire almost completely destroyed it and it was promptly rebuilt. In 1923 the church bell, stolen on 4 May 1918 by the Austro-Hungarian army to melt it and obtain war material, was relocated in the small bell tower. In 1953 the statues depicting the Blessed Virgin Immaculate and the Sacred Heart of Jesus were placed inside the church, which had been purchased by the parish in 1924. In 1985 the church was completely renovated, as it had suffered damage during the earthquake of Friuli in 1976. A further restoration involved the building in 2001. • 5 Sanctuary of the Madonna della Salute, Via Madonna della Salute, 23. In 1515 a chapel was built between the current church and the stream as an ex voto for the salvation obtained during the plague of 1511. Over time the population of the surrounding area turned increasingly numerous to the sanctuary, so much so that in the mid-nineteenth century the new and larger church in which the primitive fresco of the Madonna della Salute with Saints Rocco and Sebastiano. During the transport the frescoes of the two saints next to the Virgin were lost and only a few traces remain.
After the 1976 earthquake the building was restored.

Sacuidic Castle
  • Saquidic Castle archaeological site. The ruins of the Sacuidic castle are located near the ancient road and ford on the Tagliamento river for centuries the passage of troops, goods and pilgrims from the Adriatic to Northern Europe through the Mauria pass.
The castle has been dated around the end of the 12th century. In the last decades of the thirteenth century it was destroyed by an arson, probably wanted by the Savorgnani who in 1326 acquired the property of the Savorgnani ovens (currently Forni di Sopra e Forni di Sotto), to put an end to a clandestine activity. Among the artifacts saved from the fire were found several ingots and metal circles used to mint counterfeit coins. With the destruction of the clandestine mint, the life of the manor also came to an end. Among the remains, however, some artifacts were found, glass glasses, rare at the time, points of war and hunting arrows, an armor and other valuables.
The research in Sacuidic was promoted in the years 1889-1901, highlighting the remains and carrying out detailed surveys. After a further abandonment, the medieval castle of Sacuidic in 2004 returned to the subject of restoration work by the University of Venice. The excavation campaigns carried out have brought to light numerous finds and made it possible to date the castle: XII-XIV century. Among the finds found: fragments of pottery and glass, metal objects, coins that would suggest the existence of a clandestine mint on the spot.
