Fröndenberg / Ruhr is a city in the south of the Unna district on the border of Ruhr area and Sauerland, in the east closes the Soest Börde at.

background

The city consists of the districts: Altendorf, Ardey, Bausenhagen, Bentrop, Dellwig, Frohnhausen, Frömern, core town Fröndenberg (with village and monastery as well as Westick), Langschede, Neimen, Ostbüren, Stentrop, Strickherdicke and Warmen.

At the southern city limits, the Dysentery along, it forms the border to the Sauerland. The Hönne flows into the Ruhr in Fröndenberg.

As Frundeberg the place was first mentioned in 1197, the Cistercian monastery Fröndenberg first mentioned in 1230 and the former Ardey Castle has a long history. In Fröndenberg there were excavations for coal as early as 1575, but tunnel mining did not begin until the 18th century. In Langschede there was a small port on the Ruhr, where grain and salt were also loaded.

Today a museum commemorates the tradition of chain forging. The buildings from the time of paper production are now used for other purposes or have been converted into a landscape park.

To go biking

Cyclist memorial on the owl

Fröndenberg is pretty much in the middle of the Ruhr valley cycle path, so that an overnight stay or a stop is ideal here. You can also use the city as a central location because the train station also offers good opportunities to travel up or down the river and take your bike with you in the compartment. The bicycle bus, on the other hand, does not travel along the Ruhr but heads north to Unna (see also under mobility). For the Ruhr valley cycle path, see also City flyer.

The Kaiser route, the 480 km long route from Aachen to Paderborn follows the route that Charlemagne is said to have taken during his campaign against the Saxons.

A very special tour is that Zabel route (PDF) that after the professional cyclist Erik Zabel named and created after its training route. Zabel used to live here and now lives with his family in nearby Unna-Kessebüren. The route starts at the town hall in Fröndenberg and leads north of the Ruhr towards the east to Wickede (on the R12), where there is a small mountain classification (turn left onto the R40, max. Gradient 22%, but only about 100 meters in altitude). This can be bypassed (abbreviated) by families (stay on the R12, both routes meet again at the Ruhr Bridge). After crossing the Ruhr in Wickede, it goes back to Fröndenberg, where there is a sprint test shortly before the end. See also the ADFC flyer.

Another challenge for cyclists is that owl, a mountain with cycling history and the only cyclist memorial in Germany. The 1,200 m long ascent has an average gradient of 7.7%, with a maximum of 13%. He has already been three times a mountain classification in the Germany Tour, Erik Zabel won one of them. On top of the mountain there has been a memorial by Willi Kemper, dedicated to cyclists of all nations, since 1989.

The city has two small ones City and country tours devised leading to nearby farms and cafes: North (more for cyclists) and west (what a hiker).
