Furth in the forest (Czech outdated Brod nad Lesy) is a city in Upper Palatinate district Cham in the nature park Upper Bavarian Forest. The Further Drachenstich is considered the oldest popular drama in Germany.

Furth im Wald was first mentioned in a document in 1086. The town charter was granted to it in 1332 by the Bavarian Duke Heinrich XIV. Due to its border location, Furth in the forest was repeatedly devastated over the centuries. Furth im Wald was home to 706,000 displaced persons from 1946 - 1957. After the border was opened in 1989, Furth im Wald became a city in the heart of Europe.

Customs / culture

  • The known Drachenstich - Festival take place every year in August. For the last 12 performances during the festival time there is space for around 1,600 spectators in the uncovered arena.
  • The traditional Leonhardiritt takes place on Easter Monday. It is a more than 200 year old horse and rider procession in honor of Saint Leonhard, in which nearly 300 horses and riders take part every year.
