Gazirat el-Bairat (also Cheziret el-Bairat / el-Baeirat, Arabic:جزيرة البعيرات, Ǧazīrat al-Baʿīrāt, „Island of the camels"), short el-Gazira (Arabic:الجزيرة, al-Ǧazīra, „the island"), and Gazirat er-Ramla (جزيرة الرملة, Ǧazīrat ar-Ramla, „Sand island“) Are two growing together villages on the Nile west bank immediately across from Luxor. Due to its location near the ferry to Luxor in the area of the Luxor Temple, it offers several alternative and inexpensive accommodation options.
background
For a long time, both villages were each on a small island, hence their names. Gazīrat er-Ramla begins directly on the bank of the Nile and extends to the former canal. To the north of the canal is Gazīrat el-Baʿīrāt. The canal was largely filled in for building land and can only be seen in the south. The settlements just opposite the city Luxor For a long time they were only known to travelers who specifically opted for quiet and affordable accommodation. But now they are also part of the Luxor redesign project. The former minibus station in Gazīrat er-Ramla near the ferry was demolished and shops and a café for tourists were built in its place. The bus station was rebuilt further west behind the shops.
